Death of a Parrot

Alex the Parrot

On September 6th the world lost a bridge between species. Alex the African Grey Parrot had an amazing skill at communication. He could distinguish between colors, shapes, and concepts that my very young daughter hasn’t even begun to master yet.

I remember seeing this little bird on various PBS science shows since I was a kid… which isn’t surprising since he was born the year before I was. The sad thing is that breed of parrot has a 50 year lifespan, so this really is a shame. Feels like a little miracle that has always been lurking in the shadows of my life has just gone poof.

So if you get a chance, pause and toast a little bird with a big vocabulary.

I’ve been playing with a library page for my site for most of this year. It works fairly well, but I think I’ll give this free one a try (at least your first 200 books are free). It is called LibraryThing.
